MODERN LANGUAGES

The overall aim of the MFL component of the ITT programme course is to enable trainees to inspire, engage, stimulate and promote students’ learning through the teaching of outstanding MFL lessons.

Trainees will develop their subject knowledge throughout the course considering in greater depths the different aspects of learning and teaching related to MFL. Through discussion with the subject mentors and class teachers, trainees will also develop awareness and understanding of particular aspects of their subject and how this effects students’ progression in lessons. By the end of the year trainees will have developed a reflective approach to their teaching allowing them to continue in their career to build upon their foundations and excel as outstanding practitioners.

When applying for this programme trainees will have applied for a particular language within MFL. Whilst there is an expectation for trainees to become familiar with and teach a second language, particularly at Key Stage 3, trainees will also focus and study in depth their chosen specialism especially at Key Stage 4.

Course Objectives

The subject knowledge component of the programme will run throughout the year in conjunction with the professional studies programme. This element will reinforce the overall aims of the programme and in particular the MFL subject knowledge component will enable trainees to:

  • Maintain and enhance their own language skills including their chosen second language.

  • Develop an appreciation of the place and role of MFL within the Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculums.

  • Become familiar with the statutory curricula, frameworks and specifications, particularly with reference to the trainees specialism within Key Stage 4 and Post 16 pathways.

  • Gain an understanding of the ways that students learn and develop a variety of learning and teaching approaches to support students in achieving their potential within MFL.

  • Plan, prepare and put into practice appropriate units of work and lesson plans.

  • Develop a range of evaluation and reflection skills to allow trainees to take a reflective approach to their teaching.

  • Develop and implement a range of assessment for learning strategies within MFL.

  • Prepare students at all levels for assessment at Key Stages 3 and 4.

  • Become confident and competent to engage in the professional role and responsibilities of a MFL teacher.
